You realize that you’re hurting, that something is bothering you, but you just can’t figure what is causing you to feel so distraught.
Something traumatic happened to you in the past, and you just can’t seem to move on and move past it.
When something triggers you, you become easily angered or upset. But you don’t know why.
When something traumatic happens to you, it can get stuck in your brain and cause you problems for many years. You become emotional or upset with little to no reason. Your reactions may affect every aspect of your life, including your career, friendships, romantic relationships, and more. For example, when someone criticizes you, you might fly off into a rage and say things you don’t mean, hurting the people you love.
What is EMDR?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Deprocessing Resensitization. According to the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA), “Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and panic disorders.”
EMDR therapy guides a client uses eye movements, tappers, and auditory stimulation to help clients access their “stuck point.” Your stuck points may be a traumatic memory, painful emotions, or distressing thoughts that you’ve repressed to avoid dealing with them. This stimulation forces the right and left parts of the brain to engage and connect unlocking and healing the many different parts of your memory. You will still remember what happened, but you’ll no longer experience the overwhelming emotions you associated with it. The goal of EMDR is to help you process this memory, so you can overcome them and move on with your therapeutic journey.
Who benefits from EMDR:
EMDR is very beneficial for clients who have tried traditional talk-therapy but have had little success. EMDR helps clients experiencing a variety of mental health concerns including:
- Trauma and PTSD
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Dissociative Disorders
- Physical pain
- Grief and loss
What You Can Expect From EMDR:
From your initial consultation appointment at Forever Free Counseling, you will experience a welcoming and compassionate environment. My goal is to provide you with a safe space to talk about the things that are painful to talk about. If we mutually decide that EMDR would be a good fit for you, then I will come with a treatment plan to help access your “stuck point.”
EMDR is made up of 8 phases that focus on three areas: accessing past memories, understanding present disturbances, and creating a plan for future actions. The length of time you will be in therapy depends on the mental health concerns you’re having. You can learn more about the eight phases of treatment here.
Ultimately, after EMDR, my clients report that they no longer feel like they are being held hostage by past memories. They share that the things that would trigger intense emotions no longer hold the same power over them. Furthermore, clients who experienced trauma report fewer PTSD symptoms.
